Louisville International Airport (SDF)
Airport Information

(Louisville, Kentucky - KY, USA)

Located to the south of downtown Louisville in northern Kentucky, Louisville International Airport (SDF), is the 16th largest air facility in the whole of the USA and the gateway into northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. Louisville Airport serves around 80 destinations throughout the United States and Canada to the tune of around four million passengers per year and covers some 1,200 acres / 485 hectares.

Louisville's airport features one terminal and is situated around 6 miles / 10 km south of the city center, next to Audubon Park, Lynnview, Highland Park and Kenwood. This facility also boasts an impressive cargo-handling infrastructure operated by UPS (United Parcel Service), along with two parallel runways, around 5,600 parking spaces and features an impressive collection of art works, including a stunning wire sculpture of the mythical winged Pegasus horse, which has become a symbol of Louisville Airport.

Next to both the I-264 and the I-65 interstates and directly south of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, Louisville International Airport is well placed to access the city centre. Transfer facilities to the city and its hotels are good, with local buses, hotel shuttles, taxis and limousines all running to locations citywide, such as the Old Louisville Historic District, Churchill Downs, Clarksville, Highlands and Jefferson.

Taking an airport bus into Louisville city centre is the cheapest transport option, but also the slowest. Many hotels operate their own shuttle service direct from the airport forecourt. Within central Louisville you will find a convenient trolley service, which operates around the downtown district and is completely free of charge.

About Louisville Tourism

Situated in the north of Kentucky, right on the border with Indiana, Louisville is best known for the famous Kentucky Derby and its buzzing nightlife. Other notable attractions in Louisville include the Kentucky Derby Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, and the Louisville Slugger Museum, which is dedicated to American baseball and even features one of Babe Ruth's bats.

The Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, when Louisville Airport (SDF) is at its busiest, although there are other high-profile races that take place throughout the season here. For families, the Louisville Science Center should not be missed, while for a little more culture, the Kentucky Center for the Arts on West Main Street is a good bet.
